Applies to
All windows 10 products that have Wireshark
Problem
Background
When using Wireshark on Windows 10 platforms, the application prompts the user to install NPCap. If the installation options are not selected correctly, this can cause critical issues with the EXpert IP suite applications.
Affected products
- All Windows 10 products that include Wireshark
- Affected applications:
EXpert IP
EXpert IPTV
EXpert VoIP
EXpert IP Analysis (all four EXpert IP applications)
Problem / Symptoms
EXpert IP, EXpert IPTV, and EXpert VoIP applications no longer launch
An error message is displayed when starting the EXpert IP applications
Troubleshooting steps
Root cause
When installing NPCap, if the user leaves the WinPcap option selected, NPCap will automatically uninstall WinPcap. Since WinPcap is required for the EXpert IP applications to operate properly, removing it causes the applications to stop working.
Solution / Corrective procedure
Step 1 – Uninstall NPCap
-
- Go to Apps / Programs
- Uninstall NPCap
Step 2 – Reinstall WinPcap
-
- On the unit, use the following path:
C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Product Licenses\WinPcap\4.1.3\Installation
Step 3 – Reinstall NPCap Properly
-
- Launch Wireshark again through Test Tools
- During the NPCap installation, it is essential to clear the WinPcap option
- Confirm installation
Expected result
Once NPCap is installed without removing WinPcap, the following applications will function properly again:
EXpert IP
EXpert IPTV
EXpert VoIP
These applications will then be fully operational again.
Recommended Best Practices
When installing NPCap, make sure to clear the WinPcap option, as shown in yellow below, to avoid affecting your EXpert IP applications.
Before starting any Wireshark analysis, confirm that WinPcap is installed on the unit.
