Applies to

MAX-700B/C/D series, MAX-FIP, MAX-900 series, MAX-5205

Problem

The MAX Optical tester does not turn on or charge the unit's battery.

Troubleshooting steps

Possible Cause 1: The Battery is discharged.

Proposed Solution:

  • Charge the battery by connecting to an external power supply using the appropriate AC/DC power adapter.
  • If the unit still does not turn on, press and hold down the power button for at least 12 seconds to force a hardware reset on the unit. Release the power button, and then restart your unit as usual.
  • If there is reason to believe that the battery is deeply discharged ( the unit has been in storage or unused for an extended period), allow a few hours or an overnight charge to "wake-up" the battery.

Possible Cause 2: The unit's AC/DC adapter is not connected to an external power supply.

Proposed Solution:

  • Connect the unit to an external power supply using the appropriate AC/DC power adapter, ensuring the external power supply is switched on.
  • If the unit still does not turn on, press and hold down the power button for at least 12 seconds to force a hardware reset on the unit. Release the power button, and then restart your unit as usual.

Possible Cause 3: The  AC/DC adapter being used is faulty.

Proposed Solution:

  • Test with another AC/DC adapter of the same type.
  • Does the unit now turn on and charge the battery?

Possible Cause 4: The ambient temperature is too high or too low.

Proposed Solution:

  • Ensure that the temperature where you are charging the battery is within the specifications.
  • The battery will not recharge when the ambient temperature is below 5 ̊ Centigrade ( 41 ̊  Fahrenheit) or above 40 ̊ Centigrade (104  ̊   Fahrenheit).

Possible Cause 5: An incorrect AC/DC charger is being used.

Proposed Solution:

  • Ensure that you are using the AC/DC adapter which came with the unit. The plug is common, so double-check if there is any doubt.
  • Using an AC/DC adapter with the wrong voltage output for the unit will cause the battery indicator on the front of the unit to slowly blink red.
  • Using an AC/DC adapter with incorrect polarity may damage the charging circuit.

Possible Cause 6: The battery LED remains RED even though the unit has been charged.

Proposed Solution:

  • The battery level has not been refreshed correctly.  Press and hold down the power button for at least 12 seconds to force a hardware reset on the unit. Release the power button, and then restart your unit as usual.
  • The battery level should now be indicated correctly.

Possible Cause 7: The Battery is faulty or damaged.

Proposed Solution:

  • If the unit continues not to turn on or charge the battery after the hardware reset, the battery may need to be replaced.
  • EXFO part number GP-2209
  • Only trained personnel should replace the battery in your unit. To avoid severe injuries and irreparable damages to your unit, Always follow the instructions provided with the new battery carefully.

Possible Cause 8: The MAX Optical tester is faulty or damaged.

Proposed Solution:

  • If, after replacing the battery, the unit still does not turn on or charge the replacement battery, your unit may be faulty.
  • Please request an RMA for repair at an EXFO authorized service center.
