Does EXFO offer ANSI/NCSL Z540 or ISO/IEC 17025 calibration services?
Answer
For the vast majority of products*, EXFO’s calibration laboratories and procedures follow the guidelines of the ANSI/NCSL Z540 and ISO/IEC 17025 standards. If you want to ensure your service meets the requirements established by ANSI/NCSL Z540 and ISO/IEC 17025, we suggest that you request the Calibration with As-Found Results service where available.
Please note that although EXFO follows the ANSI/NCSL Z540 and ISO/IEC 17025 guidelines, our laboratories have not gone through the accreditation process.
EXFO, as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) of its test and measurement instruments, is not required to be accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 or ANSI/NCSL Z540. These standards are specifically designed for independent calibration and testing laboratories that provide services to external clients. They do not apply to manufacturers who design, produce, and calibrate their own instruments.
However, EXFO voluntarily follows the guidelines and best practices outlined in ISO/IEC 17025 and ANSI/NCSL Z540 to ensure the highest standards of measurement quality, traceability, and reliability in its internal calibration processes.
EXFO certifies that each unit has been calibrated using standards traceable to a national metrology institute, such as:
NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology, USA)
NPL (National Physical Laboratory, UK)
NRC (National Research Council, Canada)
METAS (Swiss Federal Office of Metrology)
Or other recognized institutions.
In some cases, calibration is performed using natural physical constants or ratio measurements, ensuring high precision and traceability. All measurement uncertainties are reported with a confidence level of 95%, in accordance with international metrology practices.
By maintaining full control over the design, manufacturing, and calibration of its instruments, EXFO ensures that every product meets stringent reliability and accuracy standards. This approach allows us to deliver high-quality solutions that align with the expectations of customers who value precision, consistency, and traceability—without the need for formal external accreditation.
